Letter from Seaspace regarding the Mount Pleasant Hospital Redevelopment

[Letter starts]

Dear Resident,

Mount Pleasant Hospital Redevelopment:-

We are writing to you because we're concerned about misleading information circulaating about the redevelopment of the Mount Pleasant Hospital site.  We want to make sure you have the facts.

Somebody recently put a sign on the site fence titled 'Hazardous Waste'.  It said "The residents demand answers" from us.

We're always willing to provide answers, although no-one had asked us any questions until we spotted the sign.  The sign didn't mention its author's name but made a seriously false claim, so we felt we should respond to everyone in the immediate area.

The sign claimed that Sea Space has removed contaminated soil "containing high level of hazardous waste" from the site.

We're glad to say this is wrong.  We can reassure you our removal of soil has not posed any dange to anyone.  We've liasised with the Environmental Agency - an independent, experrt government body - and they agree the soil wasn't hazardous.

What is true is that one of our contractors recently disposed of some soil at a waste site in Kent that wasn't licensed for that purpose, because the soil contained a very low level of contamination.  This was the result of a breakdown in communication and we've taken steps to ensure it doesn't happen again.  But while the choice of disposal point was a mistake, the contamination levels were so small that this posed no danger to anyone.

It's also worth stating that the soil has been on the site since Victorian times without reports of any harm ever being done.  Where low levels of contamination do remain, we have experts dealing with this in approved methods, either by removing it or putting clean layer of 'capping' soil on top.

We hope this puts the record straight and reassurers you.  If you have any remaining concerns, please do feel free to contact me at jamessaunders@seeda.co.uk
